Le Bistrot Paul Bert: Traditional French cuisine in Paris.

Le Bistrot Paul Bert: Traditional French cuisine in Paris.

Le Bistrot Paul Bert and its neighbor L’Ecailler du Bistrot are owned by the same family. Le Bistrot Paul Bert is the quintessential Parisian neighborhood restaurant. It serves traditional French cuisine—vegetarians might want to skip this place—with a penchant for meat served rare. They like it blue (that means very rare as in barely warm inside) but you can still order it your way. If you crave red meat and fries head for Le Paul Bert’s entrecôte-frites (rib steak and fries). This is a typical French bistro frequented by regulars as well as tourists — it’s been written about everywhere. It’s very lively and if you have a late dinner you might get to hear rowdy French people sing in English. I would highly recommend the decadently buttery Tarte Tatin or the sinfully creamy Paris-Brest (said to be one of the best in Paris) to finish on a happy note. The lunch and dinner menus are 34€ for an appetizer+main dish+dessert (or 21€ for a main dish only and an additional 8€ for an appetizer or a dessert), to choose from the regular menu, with a cheaper lunch option at 16,50€ for an appetizer+main dish+dessert (or 11€ for a main dish and an additional 4€ for an appetizer or a dessert), to choose from a smaller selection of dishes. These prices do not include beverages. Reservation is highly recommended; Le Bistrot Paul Bert is a very popular place.

La Cocotte: An adorable all food-related bookstore in Paris.

La Cocotte is a lovely bookstore nested in the very lively Faidherbe-Chaligny neighborhood in the 11th. Cookbooks, history books, books about foods that make you fart (and their fart-antidote recipes), design books, photography books, novels, essays… whatever their type the books are all selected for their common theme: food. There is a large wooden table and two benches nestled in front of the window, open for tea and homemade pastries, or used for their cooking workshops (for little ones or grown ups.)

Patricia Vieljeux: Beautiful pottery and ceramic workshops in Paris

Patricia Vieljeux: Beautiful pottery and ceramic workshops in Paris

Ceramist Patricia Vieljeux just happened to have the lamp shade that my kitchen light bulb has been missing for the past year.
Her boutique/workshop is a bit off the beaten path—unless you have a specific reason, you are unlikely to stumble upon it. This is a great place for those who might want to purchase unique stoneware and porcelain pieces made by hand. For information about Patricia Vieljeux’s workshops (for age groupe 11 to 17 and for adults) contact her boutique/workshop.

Bistrot Beyrouth: The best Lebanese pastries in Paris.

Bistrot Beyrouth: The best Lebanese pastries in Paris.

If you are looking for Lebanese pastries in Paris, Bistrot Beyrouth is where you want to get them from. Baked to the perfect golden crisp and with the right touch of honey so the sweetness won’t make you hit your sugar wall instantly, the Baklava (layers of fillo pastry and cashew nuts brushed with butter), Bookaj (pyramid-shaped pastry with cashew nut filling in layers of fillo pastry and topped with pistachios) or Lady fingers (crunchy ground cashew nuts tightly rolled into fillo pastry), to name a few, will make you go back and order more. Count 5€ for an assortment of 6 pastries. Also, Bistrot Beyrouth serves an amazing rose-flavored infusion served with fresh mint leaves and aniseeds—it is their version of the traditional Lebanese café blanc (white coffee) and is a perfect hot beverage to accompany the pastries. The food is good (they serve a Lebanese-style burger with homemade French fries that I have to try) and the service is great. The service is non-stop from noon until midnight and the food can be ordered to go.
