Patrick Roger in Paris: Chocolate spectacle and gustative excellence.

Patrick Roger in Paris: Chocolate spectacle and gustative excellence.

Patric Roger is one of France’s finest chocolatiers—he has been awarded the Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) title in 2000 and is systematically amongst France’s top ten chocolate artisans of the year.
Patric Roger is known for his extravagant chocolate sculptures that are a total delight for the eyes. He is a must-see and must-try. Aside from his top-of-the-line treats and entertaining sculptures (I’m crazy about the “Allegory”—a caramelized almond, orange and grape chocolate candy, and the “Cuzco”—almond nougatine chocolate candy), what I love about Patrick Roger are his opening hours—they are as straightforward as can be. The hours are the same everyday in every boutique. And this, believe me, is very refreshing in the land of awfully puzzle-like and debilitating store opening hours!
Check out Patrick Roger’s website to see his chocolate creations and have a look-see at his portrait… it’s worth the detour.

Le Rostand in Paris: a superb terrasse facing the Jardin du Luxembourg.

Le Rostand in Paris: a superb terrasse facing the Jardin du Luxembourg.

You might have seen the restaurant/café Le Rostand in Paris Je t’aime, with Gena Rowlands and Bob Hoskins being served by Gerard Depardieu. When it isn’t used as a movie set Le Rostand has a wonderful terrasse facing the gorgeous Jardin du Luxembourg. Le Rostand is a perfect spot for sipping champagne and eating olives in the afternoon sun, or indulging in a hot chocolate with homemade whipped cream and a sweet crêpe, say for example, after visiting Le Panthéon.

Ladurée: Succulent macarons and beautiful tea salons in Paris.

Ladurée: Succulent macarons and beautiful tea salons in Paris.

Created in the late 19th century, Ladurée—inventor of macarons—is one of the oldest Parisian tea houses. Today it counts several tearooms/pastry shops/restaurants in Paris and abroad. Ladurée is to Paris what sourdough bread is to San Francisco, catfish to New Orleans, BBQ to Texas and fried green tomatoes to the southern United States… It is part of the Paris’ culinary identity. As if Ladurée needed any publicity, Sofia Coppola’s visually stunning movie, Marie-Antoinette, made the Parisian tea house famous all over the world. Now the lines are even longer and sometimes stretch all the way around the street corner as if we were in cold war-era Russia. If you plan on eating at Ladurée on the Champs-Elysées I highly recommend reserving your table online. You can choose your day and time, and avoid the ridiculous wait in line. The online reservations will soon be extended to the other tea salons. Ladurée serves breakfast (morning pastries, bread, eggs any style, French toast, fresh fruit salads, juices…), brunch (it is served on Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 3.30pm and will cost you 35€) and lunch as well as dinner (main dish at 29€, menus at 34€ and 42€, club sandwiches from 15,50€ to 23€). Pastries and teas will coast you around 7€ each.
If you are visiting Paris in winter and wish to warm up in a cozy and elegant atmosphere, Ladurée is the place to be: it is sort of overheated and makes you kinda melt. And then you melt some more when you see the list of pastries.

Satellite jewelry stores in Paris

Satellite jewelry stores in Paris

It all started when ethnologist Sandrine Dulon traveled the world with a friend and came back with a collection of antique jewelry, semi-precious stones and other inspiring materials. First Sandrine Dulon made jewelry for her friends, then her work became increasingly popular and finally she met the person who launched her career: French Elle Magazine fashion editor fell in love with the Satellite Spring and Summer collection of 1988 and it made the cover of the magazine’s January Special Fashion issue of that year. Satellite’s new collections are bi-annual and always reflect diverse cultural influences.

David LaChapelle 2009 retrospective in Paris

David LaChapelle 2009 retrospective in Paris

Don’t miss the David LaChapelle retrospective at the Musée de la Monnaie in Paris, starting February 6th. It is the biggest David LaChapelle exhibition ever organized in France. This retrospective puts an emphasis on his more recent work, the life size 3D collage series. Some of his earlier work relating to the Star System series such as “Pamela Anderson: Over Easy, 1998”, “Elton John, Never Enough, Never Enough, 1997” , “Leonardo DiCaprio Nostalgic Styling, 1996” or “David Bowie Eyes that cannot see, 1995” will not be part of this show as originally planned. David LaChapelle changed his mind about showing those pieces right before the opening of the show. He wanted the retrospective to be more about his new work Auguries of Innocence, and more recent series such as Recollections in America, Meditation or Destruction & Disaster.

The exhibition will be open seven days a week and until 10pm on Monday and Friday.
