Willy Ronis at the Musée de la Monnaie in Paris.

Before he passed away Willy Ronis wished to see his work exhibited in Paris in celebration of his one hundredth birthday. Today, to honor his wish, the Musée de la Monnaie is showing about 150 of his photographs, some famous, others unpublished to this date.

“Their canon of saints reads: Pierre Cardin, Roberto Cavalli, Dior, Fendi, Ferré, Gaultier, Gucci, Jourdan, Miyake, Prada, Saint Laurent, Versace, Yamamoto. A typical ballad runs: “Listen my love. On our wedding day/The label will be Torrente/The label will be Giorgio Armani/The label will be Daniel Hechter/The label for the shoes will be J. M. Weston.” Brussels, their shopping mecca, is referred to in Congolese as Lola, meaning paradise.
These are sapeurs, acolytes of a 25-year-old movement called la SAPE—La Societé des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes (aka Kitendi, the religion of the cloth)—that revolves around the possession of the most expensive, most luxurious, most extravagant fashion in the world. Followers of SAPE wear $10,000 jackets and $500 shoes, but these mostly young Congolese men otherwise barely eke out a living in the rubble of Kinshasa and Brazzaville or the ghettos of Paris and Brussels, washing dishes or washing bodies, and sometimes selling their own.” -Anna Weinberg

Izis: Paris des Rêves at the Hotel de Ville in Paris.

In 1951, Izis was one of the five French photographers, along with Brassaï, Doisneau, Ronis and Cartier-Bresson, to be exhibited at the MoMA in New York. Today Paris City Hall is paying tribute to Izis with a major retrospective showcasing 270 photographs, books, magazines and documentary footage. This show focuses on his Parisian work.

Yves Saint Laurent retrospective at the Petit Palais in Paris.

Organized by the Fondation Pierre Berger and the Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris, this is the first comprehensive retrospective of Yves Saint Laurent’s work. 307 pieces taken from his haute couture and prêt-à-porter collections, ranging from his early days at Dior in 1958 to his final collection of evening gowns in 2002, will be on display. Films and photographs illustrating Yves Saint Laurent’s 40 years of creation within its historical context will complete this exhibition.

“This exhibition of some 120 of Lisette Model’s most representative photographs illustrates the very bold and direct approach to reality that made her one of the most singular proponents of street photography, the particular form of documentary photography that developed in New York during the 1940s, through the camerawork of such as Helen Levitt, Roy de Carava and Weegee.
Alongside the photographs, archive film and sound recordings of Lisette Model will evoke the photographer’s life, and there will be copies of magazines to which she contributed (Regards, Harper’s Bazaar, etc.)”
