Maison POS, Paris: Daily deliveries of fresh, seasonal organic food.

Maison POS in Paris is a tiny food store that opened in December 2010. It has a small selection of seasonal and organic produce (if not organic it is pesticide-free) as well as some carefully selected dairy products (cheeses and yogurts), charcuterie, wines and ciders. Maison POS in Paris buys directly from the producers and chooses to buy in small amounts to get a quick turnaround of their products, thus ensuring their freshness. Maison POS makes a big pot of soup every day (flavor of the day on their black board) and it is sold to go with some organic bread. They sell oysters on the weekend!

Patisserie-Confiserie Louis Etoré in Paris

Patisserie-Confiserie Louis Etoré in Paris

It doesn’t look like much from the outside, however this pastry/confectioner’s shop has been in business since the begining of the past century and in the hands of the same owners for the past forty-five years. Aside from the classic pastries (mille-feuille, St Honoré, religieuse, éclair…) this shop specializes in traditionnal French candies such as the hand-crafted réglisse de Montpellier, or the pâtes de fruits and violet candies. As the owner would say: “it’s all the old candies from back in the days, here nothing has changed except our faces.”

Patricia Vieljeux: Beautiful pottery and ceramic workshops in Paris

Patricia Vieljeux: Beautiful pottery and ceramic workshops in Paris

Ceramist Patricia Vieljeux just happened to have the lamp shade that my kitchen light bulb has been missing for the past year.
Her boutique/workshop is a bit off the beaten path—unless you have a specific reason, you are unlikely to stumble upon it. This is a great place for those who might want to purchase unique stoneware and porcelain pieces made by hand. For information about Patricia Vieljeux’s workshops (for age groupe 11 to 17 and for adults) contact her boutique/workshop.

Violette and Co: A bookstore for girls, tomboys and their friends.

Violette and Co: A bookstore for girls, tomboys and their friends.

Violette and Co is an 850 square foot space dedicated to books about women, lesbians and the rest of the queer community. It’s a breath of fresh air in a city where a guy on a motorcycle feels the need to comment about two women holding hands as he is riding by (and pass for a douchebag); in a city where four men in a car will have the urge to laugh at two women holding hands on the street (while definitely making fools of themselves); in a city where pimply teenagers will insult two women embracing each other on a sidewalk (ignorance is such a plague.) Finding essays and studies about the gay community is particularly refreshing when you want to offer, let’s say, informative literature about homo-parenting to a parent with some internalized homophobia.
Violette and Co sells novels, essays, thrillers, art books, comic books, magazines, books for youths, CDs and DVDs. The bookstore also hosts book signings, book readings, debates and exhibitions.

Bistrot Beyrouth: The best Lebanese pastries in Paris.

Bistrot Beyrouth: The best Lebanese pastries in Paris.

If you are looking for Lebanese pastries in Paris, Bistrot Beyrouth is where you want to get them from. Baked to the perfect golden crisp and with the right touch of honey so the sweetness won’t make you hit your sugar wall instantly, the Baklava (layers of fillo pastry and cashew nuts brushed with butter), Bookaj (pyramid-shaped pastry with cashew nut filling in layers of fillo pastry and topped with pistachios) or Lady fingers (crunchy ground cashew nuts tightly rolled into fillo pastry), to name a few, will make you go back and order more. Count 5€ for an assortment of 6 pastries. Also, Bistrot Beyrouth serves an amazing rose-flavored infusion served with fresh mint leaves and aniseeds—it is their version of the traditional Lebanese café blanc (white coffee) and is a perfect hot beverage to accompany the pastries. The food is good (they serve a Lebanese-style burger with homemade French fries that I have to try) and the service is great. The service is non-stop from noon until midnight and the food can be ordered to go.
