The whimsical and sophisticated world of Parisian jewelry designer Emmanuelle Zysman feels like a haven from the adjacent bustling Pigalle neighborhood. Emmanuelle Zysman uses gold, gold-plated sterling silver and semi-precious or precious stones (diamonds.) Check out the simple, yet original and soulful design of her bracelets, such as the 18k gold-thread hammered and “Diane” bracelets with their robust cotton fasteners. The “Seven” bracelets send me straight back to my childhood—they are my madeleines de Proust. Her stoneless gold rings work so well as a set. And lastly don’t miss her beautiful and more intricate sautoir necklaces and her stylish earrings (i.e: “Java” earrings.)
While her prices depend on the fluctuation in the prices of precious metals, her jewelry is always very reasonably priced. You might easily walk by her shop, find yourself wanting to see more, enter the place, fall in love with one of her pieces and buy one on a whim.
Emmanuelle Zysman works in the back of her store, all her jewelry is cast, assembled and set in Paris. Her reliable customer service offers a lifetime warranty to maintain, repair or bring your jewelry back to life.
The store also sells accessories such as the glamorous leather lamé pouch or the python glasses case, silk headscarves, wool or mohair scarves, and the timeless, fashionable and fabulous Maison Fabre gloves (check out the Steve McQueen pair…)

Franco-British couple Mr. and Mrs. Rose had a child. They called it Bakery. A Rose Bakery was born in London. Then they decided to move to Paris and they gave birth to a second, and recently a third, Rose Bakery. Rose Bakery is the name of their very successful—hence the new addition to the family—bakery/restaurants. The third Rose Bakery restaurant is in the hands of chef Kaori Endo, a 34 year-old Japanese cook who just published a book of recipes and who will be on T.V for eight cooking shows. At Rose Bakery they use quality ingredients, lots of organic and carefully chosen goods for their savory tarts, quiches, healthy salads (lentil salad, carrot salad, potato salad, baked beans, duck pot-au-feu…) and their delicious desserts (carrot cake, cheesecake, vegan fruit cake, lemon cake, green tea-raspberry cake, banana nut bread, scones, muffins, brownies…) They serve breakfast during the week and brunch on the weekend (eggs, pancakes…). In other words, Rose Bakery is a perfect place for breakfast, lunch, brunch and afternoon tea and pastries. It’s healthy, good, pretty and it is located in two great areas of Paris.

It all started in Seattle with Robin Pecknold and Skye Skjelset. They are now five and are called Fleet Foxes. “Baroque harmonic pop jams” is how they describe their music. Good lyrics, musical maturity and beautiful vocal harmonies have propelled the band onto the international scene in just a couple years. They played at the SXSW festival in March 2008, released internationally their second EP Sun Giant a month later in April, and their debut full length album Fleet Foxes came out in June that same year. At the end of 2008 Fleet Foxes was rated album of the year by Billboard’s Critic’s Choice. Fleet Foxes is currently touring and their UK shows, as well as the San Francisco ones are sold out. But at la Cigale in Paris there’s still some room left. Run, rush, race!

This museum is particularly precious for its rose garden, a little heaven of quietness tucked away from the busy streets of Paris. The perfect place, from Spring until the end of Summer, to sip hibiscus iced-tea while reading your favorite novel or writing postcards to your friends. Home of the portraitist Ary Scheffer, this 19th-century hôtel particulier—Hôtel Scheffer-Renan—saw a lot of famous artists such as Delacroix, Géricault, George Sand, Chopin, Rossini, Dickens… It is today a museum dedicated to the works of the painter Ary Scheffer himself as well as the ones of neighbor and friend George Sand.

What can I possibly add to what has already been said about the famous Denise Acabo and her shop l’Etoile d’Or in Paris? Probably nothing. If you are a chocolate fiend, a stop by l’Etoile d’Or is a must. If you are more into candy (i.e: bergamot candy from Nancy, Fouque’s Nougat from Signes, Calisson from Aix-en-Provence…) there will still be a lot for you to choose from. It is a bit pricey but that is what comes with quality and uniqueness. Denise Acabo is the only person, aside from the chocolate maker himself, to sell the famous Bernachon chocolates (outstanding chocolatier since 1958, the Bernachon family roasts its own cocoa beans imported from many different countries and creates over 50 different kinds of chocolates only available at their shop in Lyon!)
Chocolate lovers and connoisseurs come from all over the world to Paris’ l’Etoile d’Or (Denise told me that Meryl Streep came by), a precious early 1900’s style boutique nested in the 9th arrondissement, near the very lively rue des Martyrs.
Denise tries everything she sells and only sells what she likes. She’s uncompromizing when it comes to the quality of her sweets and won’t hesitate to discontinue selling one of her items if she finds that its quality has gone down a notch, such as the “quernon d’ardoises” of Angers— a blue chocolate-covered nougatine, a square-shaped sweet bearing the color of Angers’ famous stone: slate.
The classics of l’Etoile d’Or in Paris are Bernachon’s chocolates and Leroux’s salty caramels. As much of a delight those treats can be, I’m almost more enticed by the array of specialty sweets from the varied regions of France found in Denise Acabo’s kingdom. Be ready for a very special tour de France at l’Etoile d’Or!
