Penhaligon’s: sophisticated (British) perfumes in Paris.

Penhaligon’s: sophisticated (British) perfumes in Paris.

Penhaligon’s is one of the few true perfume houses in the world: designing and making its own scents, going to great lengths to achieve precise effects. Only fine and rare ingredients are used, such as hand-squeezed oil of bergamot and jasmine oil at twice the price of gold.”
Once upon a time back in the 19th century there was a Cornish barber—William Henry Penhaligon—who moved to London and became Court Barber and Perfumer to Queen Victoria. One hundred and thirty-seven years later, with 22 fragrances to its list, Penhaligon’s house has grown and established itself all over the world. Penhaligon’s perfumes are some of the most sophisticated and original scents on the market. They have been worn by Winston Churchill, Rudyard Kipling, Vivienne Westwood, Kate Moss…

While looking in vain for an old Caron perfume that has been discontinued for many years now, I stumbled upon Penhaligon’s shop on rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. I tried Malabah and was sold. I’ve been stopped on the street a few times and asked about my perfume. Yes, it’s that nice!

Stéphane Ravel’s jewelry at Françoise Montague’s shop: Jewelry for the fashion world.

Stéphane Ravel’s jewelry at Françoise Montague’s shop: Jewelry for the fashion world.

Vintage, made-to-order and costume jewelry are the specialty of jewelry designer Stéphane Ravel. He has worked for fashion houses Nina Ricci and Franck & Fils. His anemone brooch is one of my favorite pieces of jewelry in her store. It’s one of his staple designs. I could see my 80-year-old grandmother wearing it as well as my 21-year-old cousin. They come in several sizes and many bright colors and the biggest one will run you around 65€. Unfortunately, the other store rue de Ponthieu had to be closed because of fire.

Satellite jewelry stores in Paris

Satellite jewelry stores in Paris

It all started when ethnologist Sandrine Dulon traveled the world with a friend and came back with a collection of antique jewelry, semi-precious stones and other inspiring materials. First Sandrine Dulon made jewelry for her friends, then her work became increasingly popular and finally she met the person who launched her career: French Elle Magazine fashion editor fell in love with the Satellite Spring and Summer collection of 1988 and it made the cover of the magazine’s January Special Fashion issue of that year. Satellite’s new collections are bi-annual and always reflect diverse cultural influences.

Pierre Hermé: Paris’ divine pastries.

Pierre Hermé: Paris’ divine pastries.

Pierre Hermé is one of the most talented and talked about pastry chef in the world.
The front of his pastry shop on rue Bonaparte looks like a jewelry store, the inside like a casket of very precious highly talked about edible jewels. Sometimes the window displays some sweet original pop culture items such as the series of Voltron (Goldorak for the French) character made out of chocolate.
Among the amazingly colorful and tempting pastries are the very popular macarons:
Here are a few of his macarons’ flavor (all subject to change):
-Chocolate
-White truffle & hazelnut
-Mogador passion fruit & milk chocolate
-Fleur de Sel caramel
-Chocolate & foie gras
-Pistachio
-Chocolate and caramel
-Black truffle
-Balsamic vinegar (“tradizionale di Modena” aged for 25 years)
-Olive oil & vanilla (that’s right)
-Eglantine, fig & foie gras
-Grapefruit & campari
-Passion fruit & chocolat

These macarons are so pretty, such a treat to look at. The powder blush effect of some of them gave me a sweet flashback into the early 80’s when I would stand against the bathroom door and watch my mother get pretty.
Aside from THE macarons (the ones that will leave your tourist friends speechless because they never tasted anything like this before) there’s all the other marvelous pastries, precious sculpted goods, that i won’t attempt to describe because no words will suffice. But if you get a chance, try the Tarte Sarah. It’s a lip-smacking, finger-licking wonder made out of chestnut, passion fruit and Matcha green tea cream in a perfect pate sablée crust. And do not leave Paris without trying his Carrément Chocolat chocolate cake. It is simply the best I’ve had. Ever.
